Insecure Writers Support Group - February 2023

To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group Day. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time.

This month's question is:
If you are an Indie author, do you make your own covers or purchase them? If you publish trad, how much input do you have about what goes on your cover?

To answer the above question, I make my own covers, mainly because I can't afford to pay someone to make them, and strangely enough, even though I am a writer I find explaining what I'm looking for in an image difficult. Take the cover of Sorceress...it's basically the face of a woman, covered with blood spatter, and flames. Growing up I always wanted to be a writer, and I always wanted to draw...I was not skilled at that, that's my brothers playground, he is blooming amazing. But I've always seen images in things, trees, marble tiles, clouds, flowers...I've tried to draw but they come out two stages up from stick men, and about a zillion steps down from any decent drawing. I can't get the hang of Photoshop for love nor money, So playing with the likes of Canva is much more fun, I just need to find a free site for images lol.

  1. I'm a decent artist...until it comes to what I feel are realistic people, lol. So I get your feelings. Glad you found a 'medium' that works for you.

  3. I've used Canva before for logos and banners but didn't even think about using it for covers or anything else. I like the idea of using it to create buttons for my blog page, I clearly haven't explored the possibilities it offers. Thanks for the nudge in that direction!
