K is for...

Killer Villain, Hero or Anti - Hero?

Sometimes when we are developing characters to populate our stories, we have to decide if they fit into one of three groupings, these are Killer Villain (who doesn't always kill), Hero (who sometimes does kill) and the anti - hero (the one that is neither one or the other, but can tip the scales either way.

This also goes for those who are our MC's, some authors have decided to write their stories from the viewpoint of the Killer Villain, which is a very interesting place to write from. When you write from this angle, you get to decide what your villain's reasons for being who they are, are. You get to show how they think, how they feel and if they actually know that what they are doing is wrong, bad or evil. Now why I say that is because there are some bad guys out there in the world of stories who think that they are in the right and everyone else is in the wrong. Writing from the view point of the Killer Villain would indeed be interesting.

The Anti - Hero is the one in-between in more ways than one. They are unreliable as at any time they could choose to be either good (which isn't good for the bad guy) or bad (not good for the good guy). Personally if I was writing them they would be so out for their own gains, that everything they would do would be for that reason alone. These characters while unreliable can come through in the end.

The Hero, is our usual MC viewpoint, this is the good guy or woman trying to get to the end of the story in one piece having solved whatever they need to solve, fix what needs fixing, find what was lost or just fulfil their ARC. They are flawed, yet have a strong sense of what is right.

Don't forget when making out your character profiles that you are also making out smaller profiles for their helpers, the supporting cast, these are also villains, heroes and anti heroes.
