Q is for...

 Quirks...
Everyone has them, the little oddities or Quirks that make them who they are. Things like wearing mis - matched socks, always skateboarding, wearing roller skates, only eating chicken, being into DnD, cosplaying at conventions, only eating junk food...you get the idea.

Humans are complex creatures, so that means that your characters need to be just as complex, and in order to do that we need to create well rounded characters, and part of that is giving them QUIRKS...
My Sorceress likes to travel through mirrors, and mint chocolate chip ice cream. My blue skinned Alien loves coffee, has no mouth and uses her fingers to drink. My Vampire goes after Serial Killers and those who would pray on the weak.

Check out this website for hints and tips around creating Quirks for your Characters.

  1. Quirks are so much fun. And usually you don't even have to build the quirks in the initial character sketch, just bopping along writing and AJ does a Shakespeare quote and the character looks up from the page and goes "oh, yeah, during the spring I help out with the local theatre with their annual Shakespeare production." And then you are writing another character and they take pickles off their hamburger, passing them to their dog and they give these big round eyes to you through the keyboard going "What?" -- Quirks just build themselves and the character grows. It's one of the funnest parts of writing. (ps. thanks for visiting)

  2. Fun post - what's not to like about quirkiness? A character without quirks is like a cardboard - oh, well, that might be a quirk to work with.
