Why I Set my Novel in the place I did.

Setting and World: Whether writing contemporary realistic fiction or high fantasy, the environment dictates the rules, culture, and limitations of your character's world.

My novels are based in Ireland, most often than not a world that is slightly different than the one we humans actually live in. It wasn't always that way; when I started writing, I, like I imagine most newbie young writers (aeons ago), would base my novels in America or England. It also didn't help that I lived in New York for a few years and loved the city and surrounds.

Then in the 2010s-plus era, I began to think to myself, 'Why am I basing my novels in America? Why not here in Ireland?'

Don't be mistaken; I still do use America and other countries to add a little spice to the novels, like I use portaling, other worlds, and planets of my own creation. Nothing I like more than a little world creation.

I use Ireland, because it's home, and it's got a varied history and legends. We have a beautiful native language that has teetered on the edge of extinction and still balances on that knife edge. All these things make it perfect for my world, and my characters.

Why do you use the setting you did in your novels?

What is your favourite place in the novels and stories you have read?
